The public library in Qaqortup Kommunia

The library is owned by the local authorities and is open to the general public as a service to the community.

Qaqortoq Library has branches in the three villages Eqalugaarsuit, Saarloq and Qassimut.

The library building is designed and built by P.A. Cortsen in Copenhagen in 1908. It was sent to Greenland in sections and erected in 1909. The building was originally intended to be a church with a school room in the city of Narsaq.

The library is situated in a beautifull spot in the center of town and has served generations.

Up through the years the building has been used as a school, village hall, meeting place for the local authorities, courthouse and billard club.

The building has been used as a library since 1968.

Rules for use of the library

The library is open to the general public.
The library personnel will be happy to assist you.
With a library card you can borrow books and other materials up to one month.

You are also welcome to use the computer with word-processing facilities and Internet connection. You have to book an appointment for this free service.

Copying and print outs costs dkk 1,- per sheet.

Children under the age of 12 cannot receive a library card without the permission of their parents.
